WhatsApp has undoubtedly been the application that has killed the business of SMS for operators, a business that we want to remember that despite charging 15 euro cents plus VAT for each message to the operators, it did not cost them a single cent and that SMS emerged from some communication tests between switchboards unintentionally.

To calculate more or less the expense that we have saved in messages, WhatsApp has a counter of messages sent, received and the number of bytes of traffic that we have generated both with the messages and with the multimedia contents that we send and receive.

To consult these usage statistics we must first open the settings menu of our WhatsApp client and there select "Account info".

Once in this settings window we will select the option "Network use".

And here we will see a summary of all our WhatsApp activity.

As we can see, the different categories that appear are:

  • Sent messages
  • Received messages
  • Multimedia bytes sent
  • Multimedia bytes received
  • Message bytes sent
  • Bytes received message
  • Total bytes sent
  • Total bytes received

At the end of the list we can see an additional option called "Restore statistics". This option will allow us to reset all statistics to zero and re-account from the beginning all the use we make of WhatsApp, useful, for example, to have control of our instant messaging client.

This function does not have much practical use, but it is quite curious and allows us to know the use we make of WhatsApp and how "hooked" we are to this instant messaging client for smartphones that has managed to replace the usual use of SMS and Allow a much cheaper and faster communication simply by having an internet connection.
