Some time ago we announced that video calls came to WhatsApp, but not to the official version, but to the beta version. Now, we can finally say that the WhatsApp video calls are available in the official version that we can download from the Play Store .

The point is that it seems that they will be activated gradually in different countries. On my mobile device with Android 6.0 and using it from Spain, I have not yet shown the option to use them, but everything indicates what will happen in the next few hours. In this video you can see how WhatsApp video calls work.

WhatsApp video calls available with the latest update gradually.

As you can see, the use of video calls is very simple, we only have to open a chat with a contact as usual and press on the phone icon to select the video call option.

The exact moment is not known, but they will be activated soon, in fact some users can already use them. Even so, there will be a fundamental requirement so that these video calls can be made and that both parties have the application updated or an error message like the one in the following image will be displayed.

For the rest, the quality of video calls will depend on the quality of the connection we are using and may suffer cuts or jumps, but still, allow to establish a smooth communication.

I must also warn you that video calls through WhatsApp are the ones that consume the most data, reaching up to 23MB for every minute of videoconference. This is something to keep in mind if you have a very limited data rate.

As it happened with the voice calls, the application itself will offer us the possibility of assessing the quality of each call with a certain number of stars.
