A few days ago from Smartphonezine we announced the launch of Google Duo , the Google video call application. Today we can say that the application is available worldwide and we have thoroughly tested it to convey our first conclusions after its use.

Recall that Google Duo was launched as an application to compete directly with FaceTime , so avoid comparisons between both applications is virtually impossible. The first thing that strikes us is that FaceTime allows you to make audio-only calls, while Google Duo does not, although they will be incorporated shortly.

Everything you need to know about Google Duo, our experience of use.

We have tested the Google Duo application for a couple of days, the first conclusion is that it is rare to have conversations with video and audio at the same time . This barrier seems to be shared by many users, all still prefer the audio or text messages as a favorite method of communication.

The first thing we have done has been to install the application on an Android device. We begin by verifying our phone number, so that Google Duo will be associated with it. During the verification process we can do it through an SMS text message sent by Google with a code or using voice verification.

The next thing was to make a video call, but we wanted to check the quality of them with different types of connections and the results are the following:

  • Video call between two devices with WiFi: in this case the video call has been fluid and with good image quality. In the various tests we have done, the "loading" screen has appeared on some occasion, but for a few seconds.
  • Video call between a device with WiFi and another with 4G mobile data: the video call was cut more frequently despite good coverage. The quality of the image also decreases but maintains an acceptable quality.
  • Video call between two devices with 4G: the experience of use was practically the same as the previous one between WiFi and 4G.

Finally there is data consumption, according to our tests more data is consumed when the connection is via WiFi since the connection is more fluid and of higher quality. As a guideline we can say that for every minute of video call we will consume between 8 and 10 MB .
