It is an open secret that
the battle between operators and communication applications is more alive than ever
. This is reasonable, since the appearance of calls over the internet, instant messages, etc ... have led to millionaire declines in the revenues of telephone operators.
The latest news that surprised us, was the initiative of a law by the European Union so that communication applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram or Skype, have to comply with regulations similar to those of operators.
The battle between operators and communication applications is more alive than ever with this new proposal of law.
This in principle will be something that harms the applications, since with this change it is intended that the companies that own these applications, collaborate in the expansion of the 5G network.
Another argument given by the operators is that both communication applications and operators compete in the same segment, so the regulations should be the same for everyone. This fact is not new, since they already tried to force companies like Facebook, Apple or Google to pay a fee to the operators for the use of their telecommunications infrastructures.
This news in principle seems somewhat frightening and that we all do not understand, but behind all this legal battle, there are only economic interests. In the draft law that has been submitted to the European Commission, arguments are gathered that these applications have to guarantee the user the security of their service and even notify the competent authority of possible security flaws and the action plan.
Another of the most surprising aspects of this new regulation, is that
those services that offer calls associated with a telephone number (Skype, WhatsApp, etc.), will be forced to offer access to an emergency number
.
At the moment the draft has not been approved, but everything points to that there will be great changes in the rules of the game.
