We are witnessing how the screens of Android mobile devices increase their diagonal to reach figures that exceed 6 inches. These large screen sizes provide a number of advantages, but decreases accessibility when we intend to use only one hand . In an attempt to improve this accessibility, the hamburger menu (so called because it consists of three horizontal lines) is replaced by a lower navigation menu .

The hamburger menu has the disadvantage that it is usually located at the top of the screen, which makes it impossible to access it with just one hand. The new fashion is the bottom navigation menu, which if properly implemented in the application, provides numerous improvements over its predecessor.

The hamburger menu is replaced by a lower navigation menu.

Until now the screen sizes were quite contained and it was relatively easy to reach with a finger to the top of the screen, using only one hand. We all remember when the recommendations appeared to design interfaces with "material design" and thus unify designs. Now it's time for the hamburger menu.

As usual, implementing the new lower navigation menu is not trivial and you have to plan it correctly . Let's see some of its advantages :

  • Improvements in accessibility and ease of use. By correctly selecting a lower navigation menu, the application achieves a more professional result and with a more intuitive use for users. Finding the different options or sections of the application is easier and is done in a more visual way.
  • Increase of interaction and as a consequence the user gets a better performance to the application. Imagine that an application did not have hidden options and that everything was accessible and configurable in a simpler way, would be a great advantage for users.
  • As a result of the two previous advantages, we have a greater degree of user satisfaction with the application, which translates into better scores on Google Play and fewer negative comments.

If you want to see this new lower menu in operation, the Wikipedia or Google Play Kiosoko application has already updated its interface.
