Generally, our WhatsApp account is linked to a phone number because it does not use a "user + password" protocol, such as other clients such as Line or Viber. Being linked to a phone number has its advantages as additional protection by preventing a brute-force attack from stealing our credentials and supplanting our identity, although it also has drawbacks such as that we are forced to always use the same mobile number and, if we change, we would lose all the data associated with our account.
To prevent this from happening, WhatsApp has an assistant that allows us to migrate our account from one phone number to another easily so that if we change the usual number for any reason we can continue to use our account freely.
The number change assistant will copy the following sections and associate them with the new number:
Conversation histories and other information will be deleted from the WhatsApp account and in terms of usage it will be like being a new user.
To access the number change assistant, we must open the WhatsApp menu and select the "Settings" option.
Once there we will select "Account info".
And in the new window we will select "Change number".
The first thing we will see will be a window that summarizes the process of changing the number for our WhatsApp account.
Click on the "next" button at the top right of the screen to continue with the assistant. In the next step you will ask us to enter both the old number of our WhatsApp account and the new number.
Once introduced both continue with the assistant by clicking on the "done" button and the account will automatically begin to migrate. The process may take a little time depending on the load of the servers. Once the process is finished, we will have our WhatsApp account associated with our new number.
