Incognito mode, or private browsing, hides your story from curious eyes. Every time you upload a web page in Google Chrome browser on your computer, potentially confidential data is stored on your hard drive. Although these data are used to improve the navigation experience in the future, they can also be of a personal nature. If other people use your computer, you can keep things private by browsing in Incognito mode.

The computer uses the data files for a variety of purposes. From maintaining a history of the sites you have visited, to saving the specific preferences of the site in small text files known as cookies. Chrome's incognito mode removes most of the private data components so they do not fall behind at the end of the current session.

How to activate incognito mode in Chrome

Click on the Chrome main menu button, located in the upper right corner of the browser window. When the drop-down menu appears, select the option called New incognito window.

You can also start it using the CTRL-SHIFT-N keyboard shortcut in Chrome OS, Linux and Windows or COMMAND-SHIFT-N in Mac OS X or macOS.

A new window opens that declares "You are in incognito mode". A status message, as well as a brief explanation, is provided in the main part of the Chrome browser window. You can also note that the graphics at the top of the window are darker in tone, and the incognito mode logo appears in the upper right corner. While this logo is displayed, all history and temporary Internet files are not recorded or stored.

What it means to navigate in incognito mode

When you browse in private, no one else using your computer can see your activity. However, bookmarks and downloads are saved.

While you're in this mode, Chrome does not save:

  1. Information that you enter in forms
  2. Your browsing history
  3. Cookies and site data
